❛Lightning could strike❜
[William Parrish]
"Do you love Drew?"
"Do you love Drew?"
[Susan Parrish]
"You mean, like you loved Mom?"
[William Parrish]
"Forget about me and Mom. Are you gonna marry him?"
[Susan Parrish]
"I'm probably."
[William Parrish]
"Listen, I'm crazy about the guy. He's smart. He's aggressive. He could
carry Parrish Communications into the 21st century and me along with
it."
[Susan Parrish]
"So, what's wrong with that?"
[William Parrish]
"That's for me. I'm talking about you. It's not so much what you say
about Drew, it's what you don't say."
[Susan Parrish]
"Maybe you're not listening."
[William Parrish]
"Oh yes, I am. There's not an ounce of excitement, not a whisper of a
thrill. And this relationship has all the passion of a pair of
titmice."
"I want you to get swept away out there. I want you to levitate. I want
you to... sing with rapture and dance like a dervish."
[Susan Parrish]
"Oh, that's all?"
[William Parrish]
"Yeah, Be deliriously happy, or at least leave yourself open to be."
[Susan Parrish]
[William Parrish]
"I know it's a cornball thing. But love is passion, obsession,
someone you can't live without."
"I say fall head over heels. Find someone you can
love like crazy and who will love you the same way back.""How do you find him? Well, you forget your head, and you listen to
your heart. I'm not hearing any heart. 'Cause the truth is, honey,
there's no sense living your life without this.""To make the journey and not fall deeply in love, well, you haven't
lived a life at all.""But you have to try, 'cause if you haven't tried, you haven't
lived."[Susan Parrish]
"Bravo!"
[William Parrish]
"Oh, you're tough."
(Sighs)[Susan Parrish]
"Okay, Stay open. Who knows? Lightning could strike."
- 커피숍에서 우연히 만나 서로 호감을 느끼는 YOUNG MAN과 수잔의 대화.
Corinth Coffee Shop.
[Young Man]
"Morning."
[Susan Parrish]
"Good morning."
[Young Man]
"I was talkin' kind of loud there. I'm sorry."
[Susan Parrish]
"Oh, not at all. It was fascinating."
[Young Man]
"Yeah, what was 'fascinating' about it?"
[Susan Parrish]
"Um... You and, 'Honey'?"
[Young Man]
"It's my kid sister. She just broke up with her boyfriend and was
thinking about dropping out of law school."
[Susan Parrish]
"Oh, I'm sorry."
[Young Man]
"No, nothing to be sorry about. That's the way it is with men and
women, isn't it?"
[Susan Parrish]
"What's the way?"
[Young Man]
"Nothing lasts."
[Susan Parrish]
"Oh. Yeah, I agree."
[Young Man]
"Really? Why?"
"No, I'm interested."
[Susan Parrish]
"I was just trying to be agreeable."
[Young Man]
"Okay, All right. I was sharpshooting. No, just that 'nothing lasts'
stuff. That was the problem with Honey's guy. He didn't know what he
wanted. So, he's fooling around and she catches him at it. You know,
like one girlfriend isn't enough for him."
[Susan Parrish]
"So you're a one-girl guy?"
[Young Man]
"Yes, I am. That's right. Looking for her right now, actually. Who
knows? You might be her."
Susan laughs.
[Young Man]
"No, don't laugh. I just got into town. I got the new job. I'm trying
to get into this apartment."
"Anyway, so you're a doctor?"
[Susan Parrish]
"How'd you know?"
[Young Man]
"'Cause everyone's a doctor around here. This apartment building,
Everyone's in green slippers, the green pajamas. The guy I'm waiting for
to vacate... He's a doctor."
"What kind of doctor?"
[Susan Parrish]
"Um, I'm a resident... Internal medicine."
[Young Man]
"So if I needed a doctor, you could be it?"
[Susan Parrish]
"I could be her, yeah."
[Young Man]
"You could be... 'Her'."
A moment.
[Susan Parrish]
"Yeah, I could." (a moment)
"I'm working at the hospital, so..."
[Young Man]
"I see."
"This is my lucky day. I just get in this big bad city, not only do I
find a doctor, but a beautiful women, as well."
Susan looks into her coffee.
[Young Man]
"Do you mind me saying that?"
[Susan Parrish]
"Oh, No, of course. No it's fine."
[Young Man]
"Listen, could I buy you a cup of coffee?"
[Susan Parrish]
"I have some patients coming in, so I should probably..."
"Get goin'."
[Young Man]
"Yeah, I gotta get to the apartment and get off to work. But I'd
still like to have another cup of coffee."
[Susan Parrish]
"Um..."
[Young Man]
"Would you let me do that?"
[Young Man]
"It's kind of a pro bono job."
[Susan Parrish]
"Pro bono?"
[Young Man]
"Yeah."
[Susan Parrish]
"Meaning, doing good?"
[Young Man]
"That's me."
[Susan Parrish]
"Gonna be doing good all your life?"
[Young Man]
"I know what you're saying. It doesn't pay so well, but I like it."
"Eventually it'll depend on the woman I marry, I think."
"Maybe she'll want lots of kids, a bigger house, better car, uh...
College doesn't come cheap. You know? I don't know."
[Susan Parrish]
"Wow. Give up what you want for the woman you marry."
[Young Man]
"Yeah, you know what? I would."
[Susan Parrish]
"Yeah?"
[Young Man]
"Gladly."
"'Cause you make your choices, you know?"
Susan rises now, the Young Man with her, leaving money for their checks
they head for the door.
[Young Man]
"Say, you and I, if we were married, I would... No, for an example,
okay?"
"If you and I were married, I would want to give you what you need.
That's all. I'm talking about taking care of each other best you can.
What's wrong with taking care of a woman? She takes care of you."
[Susan Parrish]
"You'll have a hard time finding a woman like that these days."
[Young Man]
"Shoot, you think so?"
[Susan Parrish]
"I don't know. Lightning could strike."
❛Because I like you so much❜
- 커피숍 앞.
Susan at the door now, pauses abruptly, her eyes on the Young Man.
[Susan Parrish]
"I've gotta go."
[Young Man]
"Yeah. Listen, did I say something wrong?"
[Susan Parrish]
"No"
[Young Man]
"No? Sure?"
[Susan Parrish]
"No. No. It was... It was so right, it scares me. That's all.
Just..."
[Young Man]
"You know, I was thinking, I don't want you to be my doctor. I don't
want you to examine me."
[Susan Parrish]
"Why?"
[Young Man]
"Because I like you so much."
(a moment)
[Susan Parrish]
"And I... I don't want to examine you."
[Young Man]
[Susan Parrish]
"Because I like you so much."
"Oh, boy. Okay."
"Now I gotta go, so..."
[Young Man]
"Yep, understood."
[Susan Parrish]
"All right."
[Young Man]
"Fair enough. See ya."
[Susan Parrish]
"Bye."
[Young Man]
"Bye-Bye."
She hurries away down the sidewalk, the Young Man watching
her. Now he turns and starts off in the opposite direction.
ANOTHER ANGLE - SUSAN
She looks back at the Young Man, then turns and walks on.
ANOTHER ANGLE - THE YOUNG MAN
He looks back at Susan as the distance between them widens, now he turns
and walks on.
ON SUSAN
She looks around once more but the Young Man is still headed in the
opposite direction, his back to her. She turns the corner and continues
on.
- 패리쉬의 65번째 마지막 생일파티. 저승으로 가기 전, 조 블랙과 패리쉬의 마지막 대화.
❛That's life. What can I tell you?❜
Joe rises to meet Parrish as he approaches.
[Joe Black]
"Happy Birthday, Bill."
[William Parrish]
"Thank you."
They watch the guests gathering to view the fireworks. Joe's gaze
lingers.
[William Parrish]
"Did you say goodbye?"
[Joe Black]
"Not exactly."
[William Parrish]
"I guess you have your reasons."
[Joe Black]
"Yes."
Silence.
[William Parrish]
"Now that we have a moment, would you mind if I expressed my
gratitude for what you did for Susan?"
Joe waits.
[William Parrish]
"I never heard her speak of any man as she spoke of you. That's what
I always wanted for her. But what happens to her now?"
[Joe Black]
"I wouldn't worry about it, Bill. These things have a way of working
out."
Joe regards Parrish, waits until he has a sense that Parrish has accepted
what Joe has said, then Joe continues.
[Joe Black]
"Would you mind if I expressed my gratitude?"
Parrish waits.
[Joe Black]
"For you, for the time you've given me, for the person you are."
A moment.
[William Parrish]
"Don't blow smoke up my ass, you'll ruin my autopsy."
Joe barely manages a smile, now looks back longingly at the crowd below,
searching.
[William Parrish]
"It's hard to let go, isn't it?"
[Joe Black]
"Yes, it is, Bill."
[William Parrish]
"That's life. What can I tell you?"
A silence, an understanding there is another more to say. Joe looks
inquiringly at Parrish as if to say "Shall we?", Parrish nods and Joe
turns with him. They set off now away from the party, up a meadow that
leads to hill overlooking the river.
ANOTHER ANGLE
Up the hill Parrish's step slows, Joe slowing with him.
Just continues on up the meadow, towards the rise of the hill, Joe in
step with him.
Joe stops, Parrish stops with him.
[William Parrish]
"Should I be afraid?"
[Joe Black]
"Not a man like you."
Parrish smiles faintly, takes a deep breath, he strides out again, Joe
right with him. In tandem they continue on and disappear over the crest of
the hill. A barrage of fireworks lights up the sky.
